Dr. Angela Griffin PhD, LCSW

Dr. Angela T. Griffin was born in Berrien Springs, MI but grew up in the small town of Benton Harbor, MI, and is the youngest in a sib-ship of four. While playing various sports, she earned a full basketball scholarship to Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, and earned a BA in psychology. In 2000, she joined the National Women's Football League (NWFL), The Detroit Danger, in 2002, which changed ownership in 2003 and became The Detroit Demolition 5x Champions and was the first MVP of the Women's Sup-Her Bowl as a wide receiver and safety in 2002. In 2016 she moved to Arizona and transferred to the Phoenix VAMC in specialty mental health. While working full time, she completed her doctorate from Grand Canyon University in psychology, emphasizing performance. With over 20 years of experience treating Veterans with trauma, she specializes in techniques designed to detox toxic thinking that leads to performance anxiety, PTSD, low self-esteem, low self-confidence, stress, and emotional dysregulation.

Additionally, she tailors' specific skills to meet the needs of athletes and Veterans. Further, by understanding the importance of mental health and sports performance, she includes other strategies such as cognitive and dialectical behavioral strategies, motivational interviewing, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and psychological skills training (self-talk, goal setting, imagery, and relaxation). As a performance psychologist, she aims to strengthen the toughness of the tough-minded and toughen up the soft-minded so that athletes can see beyond their potential and see more than just a seed but what that seed can produce. Dr. Griffin has been married for 22 years with two children, ages 16 and 13. Both girls are active in sports, including club volleyball and competitive gymnastics. She enjoys going to movies, studying the bible, shopping, taking long walks, or riding her bike. Most importantly, she enjoys spending time with my family.
